WHy The West Coast?
The west is wild. Whatipu, Karekare, Piha, Bethells and Muriwai beaches all have a remote, untamed beauty that's good for the soul. Although you’ll feel a world away, many of these beautiful beaches are less than an hour from the city centre, making them ideal day trip destinations.
What’s the Itinerary?
07:00am - 09:00am
A windswept rugged coastline, 47km of surf beach and rolling dunes of black sand characterise Muriwai Beach, making it one of Auckland's most popular west coast beaches.
Muriwai Beach is unique because of its black sand, caused by the iron content derived from the ancient volcanoes in the area. The majority of the black mineral sand is carried up the west coast from Mt Taranaki through the process of longshore drift.
Muriwai Beach includes the spectacular Takapu (Gannet) Refuge at Otakamiro Point, one of only three mainland Gannet colonies in New Zealand.
The best time to visit the gannets is between October and February. The chicks hatch in November then leave for Australia at 15 weeks old returning to breed when they are 3 and 7 years old.
09:00am - 11:00am
Waterfalls & Rock Pools
Karekare has previously been named in the top 10 beaches in the world on various guides and is one of the best beaches in New Zealand.
The back drop for the black sand beach are mountains of rainforest and with a short walk you reach Karekare Falls and Opal Rock Pools. A great place to cool off in the warmer months so bring a towel just incase.
11:00am - 01:00pm
Kickback at Piha
Piha is our favourite, and many travellers favourite place in the whole of New Zealand. The black sand beach is split into North and South Beaches by the commanding Lions Rock. This small island is the neck of a volcano which erupted over 16 million years ago. When climbing it, you will get panoramic views and learn about it’s significance for the traditional Maori ancestors of the land.
Piha is a great place to relax, grab a bite to eat from Piha store or Cafe and take a browse in the West Coast Art Gallery before heading back into the city.
